Timing is Everything: When to Schedule Your Newborn Portrait Session

Booking a newborn photography session requires a bit of planning to ensure you capture those early days. You'll be surprised how quickly your little one changes in a matter of weeks! Here's a guide on when to book and what to consider:

The Best Time for Newborn Photos

The ideal time to have a newborn photography session is within the first two weeks of your baby's life, typically between 5 to 14 days old. During this time, newborns are generally sleepier and more likely to curl up into those adorable poses that capture their features. Their flexibility and comfort in being posed also make it easier to capture those classic newborn shots.

When to Book the Session

To secure a spot within this ideal timeframe, it’s best to book your newborn photography session well in advance, preferably during your pregnancy. Many photographers recommend scheduling your session during your second or early third trimester. This advance booking ensures that we can accomodate you around your due date. Since exact birth dates can be unpredictable, we'll note your due date and remain flexible to adjust the session timing as needed once your baby arrives.

Why Early Booking Matters

  • Availability: I have limited slots available, and these sessions require special care, time, and attention. Early booking ensures you can secure a spot with us.

  • Flexibility: By booking early, you can plan for a tentative date and adjust it as needed, depending on when your baby actually arrives.

  • Preparation: Booking in advance gives you time to discuss the style and preferences you have for your photos, and perhaps save for any additional purchases you may like to make.

What if You Miss the Ideal Window?

If you’ve missed the 5-14 day window, don’t worry. Beautiful photos can still be taken after this period, although the style of the session might be different depending on the age of your newborn when you make it to the studio. Babies older than two weeks tend to be more alert and may not curl up as easily, but this allows for capturing their developing personality, eye contact, and expressions. Typically we photograph newborns with an average age of 24 days old, so don't stress too much if you miss the early window!

Considerations for Booking

  • Health and Recovery: Prioritize your and your baby's health and recovery after birth. Choose a session date that feels right for your family.

  • Photographer’s Style: Look at the portfolios of different photographers to find one whose style resonates with you, whether it's minimalistic, colourful, or something in between.

  • Time: We give your precious bundles the time they need to feed, and sleep during the session. When booking your session, you should not make any other commitments for this day so that you have the time needed to get the images you want. And, despite sitting back and watching the session unfold, you'll probably be feeling like your own little nap after!

Booking a newborn photography session is a wonderful way to capture the joy and emotion of your baby's first days. The key is to plan ahead—booking during pregnancy and aiming for a session within the first two weeks after birth will give you the best chance of getting those dreamy, sleepy newborn shots. Early preparation allows you to relax and enjoy the experience, knowing that these precious moments will be beautifully preserved for years to come.
